What each section of the Award involves

Volunteering

Students dedicate regular time to serving their community through meaningful volunteer work. This could include supporting local charities, mentoring younger students, participating in environmental initiatives, or contributing to community projects, helping them develop empathy, compassion, and a sense of social responsibility.

Physical

The Physical section encourages students to improve their fitness and wellbeing by taking part in a sport or physical activity of their choice. Skills

In the Skills section, students learn a new ability or further develop an existing interest. Adventurous Expedition

Bronze, Silver and Gold: what are the requirements at each level?

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is divided into three progressive levels—Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Students can begin at Bronze or, if they meet the minimum age requirement, enter directly at Silver or Gold.

Bronze Award

Minimum age: 14 years

The Bronze Award is the starting point for most participants. Students complete the four core sections—Volunteering, Physical, Skills, and an Adventurous Expedition—over several months. The focus is on building positive habits, exploring new interests, and developing confidence through consistent participation.

Silver Award

Minimum age: 15 years

The Silver Award requires a longer commitment and encourages students to take on greater responsibility. Participants complete the same four sections, but with increased expectations and a more challenging expedition. Students who enter the programme directly at Silver will also need to complete an additional period in one of the Volunteering, Physical, or Skills sections.

Gold Award

Minimum age: 16 years

The Gold Award is the highest level of the programme and represents a significant personal achievement. In addition to the four core sections, participants complete a Residential Project, where they spend time away from home working with new people on a shared activity or community initiative.
