Choosing the Right School: 5 Questions Every Parent Should Ask

A simple guide to help parents choose the right school for their child and support their future growth.

18-08-2026

Choosing the right school for your child can feel like a big decision — because it is. A school will play an important role not only in your child’s academic development, but also in shaping their confidence, friendships, interests and outlook on the world.

For families exploring schools in Johor Bahru, there are more choices than ever. Parents may find themselves comparing national and international curricula, academic results, facilities, class sizes, co-curricular opportunities and much more.

But before asking,“Which is the best school?”, there may be a more useful question:

“Which school is the best fit for my child?”

Every child is different. The environment in which one student flourishes may not necessarily be the right one for another. Understanding your child — and what you want their school experience to give them — can make choosing a school much easier.

Here are five questions worth asking as you begin your search.

1. How Does My Child Learn Best?

Children learn in different ways and at different paces. Some enjoy structure and clear routines, while others thrive when they can explore, discuss, experiment and discover answers for themselves.

Think about your own child. Are they naturally curious and full of questions? Do they learn best by doing? Do they enjoy working independently, or does collaboration bring out their confidence? Are there particular subjects or interests that really capture their attention?

The right school should recognise these individual strengths while also encouraging children to stretch themselves.

When visiting a school, ask how teachers identify different learning needs and how students are supported when they require additional help or greater challenge. A strong learning environment should allow children to feel successful without making learning too easy. There should be opportunities to try, make mistakes, persevere and ultimately discover what they are capable of achieving.

2. Will This School Prepare My Child for the Future?

Academic achievement matters. Strong foundations in areas such as English, Mathematics, Science and languages can open important doors later in life.

But preparing children for their future means looking beyond examination results alone.

The world our children will eventually enter will require them to communicate effectively, think critically, collaborate with others, solve unfamiliar problems and adapt to change. Creativity, resilience, independence and confidence are increasingly important alongside academic knowledge.

When comparing schools, look at what learning actually looks like.

Are students simply absorbing information, or are they being encouraged to ask questions and apply what they know? Are there opportunities for leadership, sport, the arts, technology, competitions, community involvement and learning experiences outside the classroom?

A well-rounded education should help children discover their strengths while giving them the confidence and skills to pursue opportunities they may not even have considered yet.

3. Which School Pathway Fits My Family?

For families in Malaysia, another important consideration is the choice between anational and international school pathway.

Neither pathway is automatically better than the other. The right choice depends on your child, your family’s priorities and where you see their education potentially leading.

Parents considering a Malaysian national curriculum may value strong grounding in Bahasa Malaysia, local culture and a pathway towards SPM. Families exploring an international school may be drawn to an international curriculum, different approaches to teaching and learning, and pathways such as IGCSE.

Language ability, your child’s previous schooling, potential university destinations and even the possibility of relocating internationally can all influence this decision.

If you are unsure, speak to the schools you are considering. Rather than simply asking which curriculum they offer, ask what the learning journey looks like from your child’s current age through to secondary school and beyond.

For schools offering more than one pathway, it can also be helpful to understand what opportunities students share and where the experiences differ.

4. Will My Child Feel Happy and Supported Here?

This can sometimes get lost amongst discussions about results, curriculum and facilities, but it is one of the most important questions parents can ask.

Children learn best when they feel safe, known and supported.

Pay attention to how a school talks about student wellbeing and pastoral care. How well do teachers know their students? What happens when a child is struggling? How does the school build confidence? How are friendships, behaviour and emotional wellbeing supported?

There is also a lot you can learn simply by observing.

As you walk around the school, do students seem comfortable speaking with their teachers? Do classrooms feel purposeful and engaging? Are children confident enough to ask questions, contribute ideas and be themselves?

Happiness at school does not mean every day will be easy. Children need appropriate challenges and opportunities to develop resilience. What matters is knowing that there are adults around them who understand when to encourage, when to challenge and when to provide additional support.

5. Can I See My Family Here?

When you choose a school, you are also joining a community.

Strong partnerships between parents and schools can make an enormous difference to a child’s experience. Parents should feel that communication is open, that questions are welcomed and that they understand what is happening in their child’s learning.

Ask how the school communicates with families and how parents can become involved. This could include parent events, workshops, school celebrations, volunteering opportunities or simply regular communication with teachers.

Most importantly, consider how you feel when you are there.

Can you imagine your child walking through those gates every morning? Can you see your family becoming part of this community for the next few years?

Sometimes that feeling matters just as much as what appears on paper.

School Tours: What Should Parents Look For?

A school tour is one of the best opportunities to move beyond websites, brochures and social media and see a school for yourself.

Of course, facilities matter. Look at classrooms, sports spaces, libraries and specialist learning areas — but don't stop there.

Watch the people.

Notice how teachers speak to students and how students respond. Look at whether children are participating in their lessons or simply sitting quietly. Listen to the questions they ask. If you have an opportunity to speak with students, ask them what they enjoy most about their school.

Parents can also use a school tour to ask practical questions about class sizes, learning support, languages, co-curricular activities, safeguarding, transport, school hours and future academic pathways.

These everyday details can give you a much clearer picture of what your child’s actual school experience could look like.
