High-Impact Mathematics Learning in Action: Key Stage 3 Students Design Their Own Maths Board Games

At Tenby International School Setia Eco Gardens, we believe that the most effective learning happens when students are challenged to apply what they know in meaningful and engaging ways. Our recent Key Stage 3 Mathematics Learning Celebration showcased exactly that, as students took on an exciting Board Game Challenge that transformed mathematical concepts into interactive games designed by the students themselves.

Rather than simply solving questions from a textbook, students were tasked with creating their own maths-based board games. From Snake and Ladders and Race to the Finish to Escape Rooms, Treasure Hunts, Kingdom Adventures and even entirely original game concepts, each project required students to think critically about how mathematics could be embedded into gameplay.

Students worked collaboratively in pairs to design games that were both educational and engaging. Their challenge was not only to create an attractive game board, but also to develop clear rules, mathematical challenges and solutions that would allow players to learn while having fun.

This wasn't simply a creative activity—it was a powerful demonstration of mathematical understanding.

Bringing the Key Stage 3 Curriculum to Life

Designing a successful maths board game draws on many of the core skills developed throughout the Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics curriculum, while laying strong foundations for IGCSE Mathematics.

Students were challenged to apply learning across a range of topics, including:

  • Number and operations, including fractions, decimals, percentages and ratios
  • Algebra, through equations, patterns and mathematical reasoning
  • Geometry and measure, using angles, shapes, coordinates, perimeter, area and scale
  • Probability, by incorporating chance and game mechanics
  • Problem-solving and reasoning, creating questions that require logical thinking rather than simple recall
  • Communication, by writing clear rules and explaining mathematical concepts to others

The challenge also encouraged students to explore additional mathematical areas such as sequences, statistics, volume and metric measures, demonstrating the breadth of knowledge developed throughout Key Stage 3.

Perhaps most importantly, students had to decide how to use mathematics in a meaningful context—moving beyond finding the correct answer to designing experiences that challenged other players to think mathematically.

Learning That Develops Deeper Understanding

Projects like these reflect the way mathematics is taught at Tenby.

Our lessons are carefully designed to keep students actively engaged, encouraging them to analyse, justify, create and collaborate rather than memorise procedures alone.
