Horizons Week 2026: Where Learning Goes Beyond the Classroom

At Tenby International School Setia Eco Gardens, we believe some of life's greatest lessons can't be taught from a desk.

They are discovered while navigating unfamiliar terrain, solving real-world problems with friends, stepping outside comfort zones and reflecting on experiences that shape confidence and character. That's exactly what our Year 10 students experienced during this year's Horizons Week, a four-day, three-night NextGen Explorers: Survival & Leadership Camp on Tioman Island.

Every Experience Had a Lesson Behind It. The adventure began long before students reached Tioman Island. Through team-building games, icebreakers and a beach scavenger hunt, students formed strong working groups, learnt to communicate effectively and embraced the collaborative spirit that would carry them through the week.

As the programme unfolded, students were challenged to think, adapt and lead. They trekked through nature trails while learning practical survival skills, gaining confidence by solving problems in unfamiliar environments rather than relying on instructions. Orienteering challenges encouraged students to navigate using maps, think critically under pressure and work together to overcome obstacles. Learning also extended beneath the surface of the sea.While snorkelling among Tioman's vibrant coral reefs and taking part in marine conservation activities, students developed a deeper appreciation for biodiversity and the importance of protecting fragile ecosystems. Environmental responsibility was no longer a classroom discussion it became something they experienced first-handl Leadership Through Service.

One of the most meaningful moments of Horizons Week saw students giving back to the local community in Kampung Salang. Community service activities encouraged students to recognise that leadership is about making a positive difference to others. By serving alongside one another, they developed empathy, teamwork and a greater understanding of their role as responsible global citizens. Throughout the programme, large-scale simulations and team challenges placed students in situations where they had to communicate clearly, make decisions together and adapt when plans changed. These authentic experiences nurtured resilience in ways that traditional classroom activities simply cannot replicate. Evenings brought opportunities for reflection through team showcases, cultural performances and bonfire sessions, allowing students to celebrate achievements, strengthen friendships and consider how each experience had helped them grow.

 

Learning That Lasts Long After the Trip. Horizons Week isn't simply an outdoor adventure or a school trip. It is an integral part of the Tenby curriculum, carefully designed to help students apply classroom learning in authentic contexts, deepen their understanding through enquiry and reflection, strengthen communication and collaboration, and develop the independence, resilience and confidence they'll carry into future study and life beyond school. These experiences are deliberately curriculum-linked, ensuring that every challenge, every conversation and every reflection contributes to students' academic and personal development.
