100% of our 2026 IGCSE language students achieved grades A–C.* Behind that result are students with very different starting points. Some entered their IGCSE years already demonstrating a natural strength in languages and needed to be challenged towards the highest grades. Others required greater support to develop their vocabulary, examination technique or confidence in using another language. At Tenby Schools Setia Eco Gardens in Johor Bahru, supporting both matters. Our recently released 2026 IGCSE language results saw 100% of students achieve A*–C across our language subjects, alongside particularly strong outcomes inChinese Language, where 100% achieved A–A, and Foreign Language Malay, where 75% achieved A–A**. While we are proud of these results, they also provide an opportunity to look at what happens long before students enter the examination hall. From baseline assessments and individual action plans to targeted intervention and additional challenge for high achievers, our language teachers use each student's performance to answer an important question: What does this particular student need to do to reach their next grade? Support Begins Before the IGCSE Examination Year Effective IGCSE preparation does not begin a few months before the final examination. From Year 10, teachers draw on student's Year 9 Checkpoint Examination results and previous term assessments to understand their existing level of proficiency. Students also complete a baseline assessment at the beginning of the academic year. Together, this information gives teachers a clearer picture of each student's strengths, gaps in learning and potential for further progress. Importantly, it also allows teachers to set appropriate expectations. A student who needs additional language support may require a structured plan to move from a D towards a C and beyond. A student already achieving a B or A requires a different level of challenge to push towards an A or A*. The objective is not simply for students to maintain their current performance, but to understand what their next level of achievement looks like and how to reach it. Individual Action Plans Turn Assessment Data into Next Steps Assessment is most valuable when it leads to action. Throughout the IGCSE programme, our language teachers use classroom performance, term assessments, mock examinations and ongoing teacher feedback to monitor each student's progress. For Bahasa Melayu and Mandarin in particular, this information is used to develop individual action plans with clear and measurable targets. Instead of broadly telling a student that they need to “improve their writing”, for example, teachers can identify the specific areas preventing them from reaching the next grade boundary and focus attention there. Regular progress reviews allow these targets to evolve as students improve. They also give students greater visibility of their own learning, helping them understand what they are currently achieving, where they need to improve and what they can actively do about it. Targeted Intervention for Students Who Need More Support When assessment data shows that a student is underperforming or at risk of missing their target grade, teachers can intervene early. Support may include weekly intervention sessions, small-group teaching, one-to-one guidance, additional practice or focused examination-skills workshops. As students approach their IGCSE examinations, this becomes increasingly targeted. Teachers work with students on particular papers or sections in which they are less confident, helping them recognise keywords, interpret what a question is asking and understand what examiners expect from a strong response. Live feedback is particularly important during this stage. Rather than simply receiving a mark after completing a task, students are shown where their response could be strengthened and how to make those improvements. This creates an important shift fromknowing that an answer is incorrecttounderstanding how to produce a better one next time. Building the Vocabulary and Confidence to Perform Under Examination Conditions Success in IGCSE languages requires more than memorising vocabulary. Students need to be able to retrieve what they know and use it appropriately across reading, writing, listening and speaking tasks — often under considerable time pressure. Our language lessons therefore incorporate opportunities for students to practise using language through presentations, interviews and conversational activities, alongside explicit teaching of vocabulary, useful phrases and examination techniques. Students also have access to differentiated revision materials, including topic vocabulary, grammar summaries, past-paper questions, writing frameworks, speaking tasks, listening and reading practice, and mark schemes. These resources allow students to focus their revision on the area’s most relevant to their individual needs while developing greater independence as the examinations approach. An 'A' Is Not the Finish Line Individualised support is just as important for high-achieving students. Students already performing at an A grade need to continue being challenged if they are capable of reaching an A*. In English, higher-attaining students work with increasingly complex fiction and non-fiction texts across different genres. They are exposed to more sophisticated vocabulary and challenging speaking and interview tasks. Students also listen to and analyse blogs, interviews and TED Talks featuring both native and non-native speakers, broadening their exposure to different styles of communication while developing greater confidence as speakers and listeners. Across our language subjects, assessment information is used to identify the finer areas that could separate a good response from an exceptional one. The principle remains the same: every student should know what progress looks like for them — including those already achieving highly.
