Tenby International School, Miri

Cross Cultural

Who are we?

Tenby International School, Miri is the newest member of the Tenby Schools group. There are already Tenby international and private schools in Ipoh (Perak), Penang and Setia Eco Park (Selangor).

Our first school was founded in Ipoh by expatriate planters, miners and soldiers who wanted to make sure their children received high quality education based on a traditional British system. The school is named after the founding principal, Mrs. Dorothy Nelson-Doig’s hometown, Tenby, which is a small fishing village in Wales.

What do we offer?

The school offers an international student-centred programme for students from Early Years to Secondary (age 3 to 18), with the primary and secondary schools operating on the same campus. In September 2011 the school will initially provide courses for students up to the age of 13.

The Early Years and Primary School

All the children follow a curriculum based on several broad areas of study:

  • International Primary Curriculum (IPC)
  • Literacy (English)
  • Numeracy (Mathematics) as set out in the English National Curriculum documents.
  • Additional languages, (currently Malay, Chinese, French and Dutch). Malay is compulsory for Malaysian students.

The IPC is taught in English and is based on the latest approaches to teaching and learning. It follows a child-centred thematic approach and there is rigorous assessment ensuring that each child attains the highest possible standard. This integrated curriculum includes study of the humanities, science, ICT, art, music and PE and reinforces the learning in the literacy and numeracy programmes.

Numeracy and Literacy are taught according to the English National Curriculum through daily literacy and numeracy lessons. A support programme is available for children who initially require additional tuition to develop their English language. The extent of this support depends on individual needs as determined by the school. The school places a strong emphasis on the children’s ability to achieve high standards in both Literacy and Mathematics.

External assessment at the end of Year 6 is administered by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE).

The Secondary School (Years 7 to 11)

In the Secondary School, the school follows the National Curriculum for England appropriately modified for international students. All students study the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Information Communication Technology (ICT) together with Geography, History, Design-Technology, Music, Drama, PE, Art and additional Languages (French, Chinese and Malay are at present available, all Malaysian students are required to study Malay). External assessment at the end of Year 9 is through the Checkpoint tests administered by CIE.

In Years 10 and 11, students choose a range of subjects from the Languages, Humanities and Social Sciences, Sciences, Mathematics and Creative, Technical Vocational groups, leading to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations. The IGCSE is an internationally renowned and recognised qualification for further education.

It is planned to open a sixth form from September 2015 offering either the Cambridge A level examinations or the IB Diploma.

Co-curricular Activities

Co-curricular activities play and important role in the life of the school and in ensuring an all-round holistic education for your child. All children are expected to participate in the programme. The range of activities offered depends on the skills and interests of both school staff and students but includes activities within the expressive arts, sports and team building activities. Students choose from a large selection available on the current list. Unfortunately it is not always possible for children to get their first choice of activities. Parents are always welcome to run after-school clubs of their own. Some of our most popular activities have been organised by parents.
